“I joined Unmasked because I am really passionate about progressive mental health and helping others. I love to see the overlap of technology and mental health and how it’s making an impact on the student body and other universities around the country.”
Amelia Sicignano ‘22 | Human Health
“I’ve always struggled with mental health issues, but my freshman year was particularly rough. I didn’t feel like I could ask for help due to the fear of being judged and I thought no one would understand. Nobody knew I was suffering until the spring semester was over. If Unmasked had been available, I could have had a safe place to talk and found resources to help pick myself up. I wish I had Unmasked back then, but I’m hopeful that going forward it can help people who are similarly struggling. So, no matter what app users are struggling with or what thoughts they are having, they know they are not alone.”
Davis Van Inwegen ’22 | Political Science
“I joined Unmasked to promote awareness within social groups that stigmatize therapy and mental health. As a society, I feel as though we’re almost over the hump of instilling mental health as an important aspect of care, and we have to get other groups over that hill with us, lest the be left behind and suffer because of it.”
Anushree Jain ’23 | Psychology and Business
“I joined Unmasked because I struggled with mental health problems and especially body image issues and I found that I didn’t have the resources to cope with it. Since then, I knew that I really wanted to be a part of something which would help people and give them the resources to cope so they would never have to go through what I experienced.”
Stephanie Velasco ’22 | Psychology
“I’ve struggled with mental health for most of my life, and it’s not something I would wish on anyone. Being Latinx made it more difficult given the fact that the subject of mental health is taboo. When I told my parents about my struggles, they told me that my therapist was lying to me. They told me that I was okay and don’t need therapy. However, I did what I thought was best for me and kept going. I’ve improved so much and I want to be able to give back to those who are in similar circumstances. Mental health support is also incredibly inaccessible. This app not only connects you with helpful resources, it also provides you a kind and compassionate community that will help you as best as they can. bell hooks once said, ‘Rarely, if ever, are any of us healed in isolation. Healing is an act of communion,’ and I think Unmasked helps embody that.”
Karishma Dangodara ‘22 | Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology
“Depression, anxiety, and stress, in general, are such prevalent issues amongst college students today. However, there is still a stigma around these issues that deters people from talking about their own. I joined Unmasked because I was drawn by their effort to reduce this stigma.”

Ryan Kenneally ’22 | Psychology and Sociology
“Who wouldn’t want to be a part of the Unmasked project? I joined Unmasked because I firmly believe that the spectrum of assistance and the community it provides will benefit everyone at Emory. The anonymous, welcoming, and approachable stance encompassed by the platform welcomes the recognition of mental health and promotes the unity that our campus desperately needs!”

“I joined Unmasked because I want to aid in breaking society’s many stigmas around mental health. I hope to help normalize talking about mental health and reaching out for help.”

No matter who you are, everyone can be working to improve their mental wellness, regardless of whether you think you need to or not. I think everyone in the world deserves a safe space to feel free to talk about their struggles, their triumphs, or anything going on in their life. I think having a community specifically for college students great as it helps everyone feel less alone and more connected with their peers. I’m super excited and honored to be part of such a great team and community!”
Marissa Erickson ’23 | Biology
”The main reason why I joined Unmasked is because I wanted to make a difference during these difficult times. The UMN campus can seem overwhelming, and the struggles faced by a college student, especially now, can feel isolating. I jumped at the chance to be a part of a community bringing people together, instead of driving them apart. What I like most about Unmasked is the anonymity. We see so much hate around us, so knowing that there are people who care and want to help in times of need is rejuvenating.
